200th Anniversary Essay Contest
Who: 6th graders (2009-2010 School Year)
What: Do you know the story of Dr. Ephraim McDowell, Jane Todd
Crawford, and the famous 1809 surgery? Learn about it and enter this
contest! You could win a $25 gift certificate or another prize!
Topic: What would I have done in Dr. Ephraim McDowell’s or Jane
Todd Crawford’s place?
Details: Essays should be typed 1-1.5 pages 12 pt.
font, double-spaced. They should be accompanied by a cover page with
the author’s name, school, address, and phone number. All subsequent
pages should have the title on them, but not the student’s name.
Students will be graded on research/accuracy, quality of thought,
creativity, and grammar. Any student enrolled in 6th grade in KY is
eligible. Homeschoolers in KY are eligible but must turn 12 between
September 1st 2009 and August 31st 2010 and include their birthday
on the cover page. Proof of eligibility may be requested and failure
to comply will result in disqualification.
Essays are due by 4:00 Wednesday September 9th to
McDowell House Museum by mail (received, not postmarked), hand
delivery, or e-mail.
